Math Enrichment Activities

The Live Oak Math Department has put together another great series of math enrichment opportunities. Math enrichment ranges from challenging, competitive programs to more review-based skill development. Whatever your student's skills or interest level, there are ways to continue enhancing their love for math. 
Math Olympiads Practice
What/Why: Do some practice problems in preparation for the upcoming Math Olympiads.  8th graders can volunteer to help students in grades 4-5.
Who: Students in grades 4-8
Where/How: Check in to After-Care or Lostopia.
When:  Mondays, after school  (Grades 4-5 are 3:10pm to 3:45pm; Grades 6-8 are 3:25pm to 4:00pm)

Math Olympiads Competition
What: This is a math competition with 5 problems to be completed in 30 minutes.  There are 5 Math Olympiads each school year.
Why: Challenge yourself and have fun with math in a low-stakes, friendly environment.
Who: Students in grades 4-8
Where/How: Check in to After-Care or Lostopia.
When:  Mondays, after school  (Grades 4-5 are 3:10pm to 4:00pm; Grades 6-8 are 3:25pm to 4:15pm)

Math Olympiads Review
What/Why: Go over the problems and answers from the last Math Olympiads.  8th graders can volunteer to help students in grades 4-5.

AMC8
What: This is a math competition with 25 multiple-choice problems to be completed in 40 minutes.
Why: Challenge yourself and have fun with math in a low-stakes, friendly environment.
Who: Students in grades 6-8 only
Where/How: Check in to After-Care or Lostopia.
When: Monday, January 22, 2024, 3:25pm to 4:30pm

Julia Robinson Math Festival
What/Why: This is a family school event for some fun with math!
Who: All grades, family members, friends; We need 8th grade volunteers and parent volunteers.
How: There will be more information about signing up closer to the event.
Where: Live Oak School, Grand Hall (near main entrance on the first floor)
When: Date TBD, 10am to noon  (Last year, it was Saturday, February 4, 2023.) (There will be training for volunteers at 9am before the event.)


MATH ENRICHMENT FAQs:
FAQ #1: I want to participate in Math Olympiads, but I already have other after school activities this Monday.
Answer: You can get the problems from your math teacher during school after Monday and you can complete them as challenge work, but we can't count your score in the official contest.

FAQ #2: I want to participate in Math Olympiads, but I can’t make it to all 5 competitions.
Answer: You can participate in any of the challenges; it is not required that you participate in all of them.

FAQ #3: Do I have to attend the practice (before the competition) and/or the review (after the competition) if I want to participate in the Math Olympiads?
Answer: No, attending the practice and the review are not required
